Summary
Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer
combined and chronic pain is the most common reason for long term
disability. Managing non-malignant pain is necessary but has become
very controversial due to issues of misuse, abuse and potential
dependence. This session will address describe how an
interdisciplinary approach can produce positive patient outcomes.
Objectives
- Recognize the need for management of chronic pain
- Identify the impact of pain on a patient’s overall health status
- Evaluate how managed care organizations can facilitate appropriate pain
management
