Summary
COPD is a preventable and treatable disease that results in significant morbidity, mortality, and costs. Treatment uses a stepped care approach utilizing inhaled medications and non pharmacologic therapy. Smoking cessation, both on an individual and societal basis, is the most important factor in fighting COPD.

Objectives
  • Discuss COPD Guidelines from the American Thoracic Society and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD)

  • Discuss the complications caused by COPD and prevention of complications

  • Identify current and new drug therapies for COPD and other therapies, such as oxygen or pulmonary rehab

  • Identify lifestyle changes to improve the COPD patient’s quality of life

The National Association of Managed Care Physicians (NAMCP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The American Association of Managed Care Nurses (AAMCN) has been approved as a provider of continuing education by the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA).  VNA is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
